I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
It was a pleasure to read this anthology! It had a bundle of varied and well-written romance novellas from authors old and new to me. It had suspense, angst, forbidden romance, and rom-com, all of which I’d enjoyed. If I were to choose a favorite, I’d say Blood on the Bayou by Heather Graham, a surprising choice since I don’t usually read romantic suspense. I didn’t expect to enjoy Dance of Desire due to the taboo aspect of the MCs relationship, but I ended up loving it.
I think most contemporary fans would enjoy this bundle. The stories are fun and engaging, and it made me want to widen my reading horizon.
Hidden Ink by Carrie Ann Ryan ()
Adult, Contemporary Romance
Hidden Ink is a novella in the Montgomery Ink series, and although I haven’t read that one yet, I was able to follow along. The Montgomery crew and their SOs were reintroduced, but the focus of this story is about Hailey, the owner of the cafe beside the Montgomery’s tattoo parlor, and Sloane, one of the tattoo artists. The two have been circling around each other for a while but haven’t made that jump to be together for their own reasons. Hailey hasn’t told anyone she was a breast cancer survivor and that it left many scars on her body, and Sloane hasn’t talked about his life before . I admire Hailey for her strength and generally positive outlook, but there were more “I don’t deserve her” Sloane monologues more than anything, and it was a bit much.
Blood on the Bayou by Heather Graham ()
Suspense, Contemporary Romance
Loved this novella! I don’t usually read suspense novels because I get freaked out easy, but I had a lot of fun reading Blood on the Bayou, a novella in the Cafferty and Quinn series. A series of killings related to rougarou, a mythical creature in the bayou, no suspects except said mythical creature, and clues here and there. It was fun to guess who the killer was, and like Eve from Between the Bookends said, it was like a Scooby-Doo mystery! The whole time, I was sitting on the edge of my seat, devouring each page. I also love how New Orleans and a bit of its culture was featured in this story and how the mystery was weaved in it. If I wasn’t such a wimp, I’d read the whole series. Maybe during mornings.
Searching for Mine by Jennifer Probst ()
Adult, Contemporary Romance
Searching for Mine is a novella in the Searching for series but works as a standalone with a few references from the series. If you’ve read the series, this novella stars Connor Dunkle, Nate’s big brother. I haven’t read the series but didn’t have any difficulties getting into the story. At thirty-eight, Connor Dunkle is in his last class to finally get a degree he’s worked hard for the past two years. Thing is, he’s gotten Fs on the class’s papers, and his plain and stuffy professor isn’t giving him a break. He tried to flirt with her, charm her, but Ella Blake won’t fall for it. He has to work hard his grade if he wants it.
The two were in obvious need of personality development makeovers, but fortunately there’s character growth for both of them. Ella started off as this uptight, snarky, almost vicious woman who attacked Connor. She took offense to most things he said (but hey, he’s a bit misogynistic at the start of the story––or maybe more than 50% of it–– so I kind of get it), but as they got to know each other, they had more in common than they thought. Connor is amazing with Ella’s son, Luke, and the friendship between Connor and Ella was sweet. I really like the conversations about classic literature and the talk of feminism and the patriarchy in the past. I also like how straightforward Ella is and how she took the bull by its horns with Connor. She’d probably reprimand me for my cliche description. Heh. Over all, I enjoyed this novella. It was a hate-to-love, friends-to-lovers story with just the right pace.
Dance of Desire by Christopher Rice ()
Adult, Contemporary Romance
READER ADVISORY: DANCE OF DESIRE contains fantasies of dubious consent, acted on by consenting adults. Readers with sensitivities to those issues should be advised.
I have to be honest. I was weary to read this story as I don’t usually read romance novels with a bit of a taboo relationship. So you see, Amber and Caleb became adoptive siblings when they were fifteen when Caleb’s parents were killed. Their romance when they were kids was cut short because of it, but the love was already there, deep in their hearts. They moved on with their lives and married other people, but when that didn’t work out, they found themselves close to each other again,
Amber and Caleb’s romance was faced with countless roadblocks along the way, the biggest one dropped onto them when they were fifteen. Years later, they’ve been given the chance to finally follow their feelings, and they did. While one expects angst throughout the story, this one had a lot of hilarious moments, and I found myself rooting for the star-crossed lovers.
I’m so glad I read this novella. It was incredibly well-written, funny, heartwarming and incredibly sexy. The plot was well-developed and wasn’t as rushed as novellas usually are; a pleasant surprise for me, really.
Some Sort of Happy by Melanie Harlow ()
Adult, Contemporary Romance
I read this a while back; long before I fell head over heels in love with the romance genre entered the wonderful world of book blogging. This novella is one of the reasons why Melanie Harlow has earned a spot in my one-click list. It had an effortless kind of humor, one that makes you laugh unintentionally (and intentionally), and oh my, Melanie Harlow knows how to write a sex scene; she pretty much perfected it. I loved Skylar and Sebastian’s relationship, and how vivid and accurate his OCD was portrayed. It wasn’t overdone and exaggerated the way it is sometimes portrayed. Although it bothered me a little how pushy Skylar was, she helped him get through it and his fears the way he helped her with hers. By the end of the novella, I was grinning so much, my face kind of hurts. The novella was mostly light, funny and hot, and if any of you are Frenched fans, there’s a guest appearance from a beloved couple.
Magnificent Bastard by Lili Valente ()
Adult, Contemporary Romance
I had a hoot reading this one! Plus points for the little fake relationship aspect and the tireless friends-to-lovers trope! After getting his heart broken by his ex, Sebastian “Bash” Prince founded Magnificent Bastard Consulting where he helps women scorned stick it to the men who dumped them. He has help in the form of his virtual assistant, Penelope “Penny” Picket, and although they’ve never met, they’ve become close friends through their digital correspondence. But when Penny makes a surprise appearance, Bash finds out how sexy his assistant, his friend, actually looks. Now Penny’s the one in need of his services when she was forced to become the maid-of-honor of her ex who left her for her very own mother.
I love Bash! He’s so charming and funny, and it was fun to read most of the novella in his perspective. I love their relationship and found their banter hilarious, and sexual tension steamy. And two words: Dirty. Talk. It was hot and not too wordy; just right to make me fan myself and hope to be the receiving end of Bash’s naughty words.
If you’re looking for a fast-paced, steamy, and funny read with a charming hero and heroine. This was my first Lili Valente read, but I’ll be sure to read her other works soon!
